General Information: Today, triploid (seedless) watermelons are the norm and consumers expect these fruits to be available in the produce section when visiting their local produce store or stand. Seedless watermelons first were actively marketed and sold in the 1980’s by SunWorld. By 2004, seedless watermelon comprised nearly two-thirds of the watermelon retail market in the United States. Smaller sized diploid (seeded) watermelons, commonly called ice box watermelons, have been available for years in the United States and Asia.
